The operational functions of the Central Bureau of Narcotics are monitored by Department of Revenue.

Enrich Your Learning:

Narcotics Control

  • The Narcotics Control Division administers the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 which prohibits, except for medical and scientific purposes, the manufacture, production, possession, sale, purchase etc. from India or transhipment of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

Central Bureau of Narcotics

  • The Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) headed by the Narcotics Commissioner, headquartered at Gwalior.
  • The administrative control of the department lies with Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBEC) while its operational functions are monitored by the Department of Revenue.
  • It performs the function of National Opium Agency for India under the Single Convention on Narcotics Drugs 1961 to exercise control and supervision over opium poppy cultivation, which is presently undertaken in selected notified areas of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
  • In addition to the work relating to control over opium poppy cultivation, the CBN takes preventive action against drug trafficking and enforces the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and Rules made there under.

Government Opium and Alkaloid Factories

  • The Government Opium and Alkaloid Factories (GOAF), under the administrative control of the Department of Revenue, is engaged in the processing of raw opium for export purposes and manufacture of opiate alkaloids.
  • The organization is headed by the Chief Controller of Factories.
  • The Narcotics Control Division administers the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act,1985 (61 of 1985), which prohibits ,except for medical and scientific purposes, the manufacture, production, possession, sale, purchase, transport, warehouse, use, consumption, import inter-State, export inter-State, import into India, export from India or transhipment of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

Answer: South China Sea

Enrich Your Learning:

East Timor Sea

  • East Timor is ranked first with 85% of the front and 100% of the back of the packaging being used for pictorial warnings.
  • It comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island surrounded by Indonesian West Timor.
  • Australia is the country’s southern neighbour, separated by the Timor Sea.
  • The country’s size is about 15,007 km2 (5,794 sq mi).
  • East Timor was colonised by Portugal in the 16th century, and was known as Portuguese Timor until 28 November 1975, when the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (Fretilin) declared the territory’s independence.

South China Sea

  • South China Sea is an arm of western Pacific Ocean in Southeast Asia.
  • It is south of China, east & south of Vietnam, west of the Philippines and north of the island of Borneo.
  • Bordering states & territories (clockwise from north): the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam.
  • It is connected by Taiwan Strait with the East China Sea and by Luzon Strait with the Philippine Sea.
  • It contains numerous shoals, reefs, atolls and islands. The Paracel Islands, the Spratly Islands and the Scarborough Shoal is the most important.

What are the advantages of placing satellites in Low Earth Orbit?

Answer:

  • As it is near to the earth, LEO satellites orbit provides better signal strength. Hence less power is needed for transmission.
  • It has least propagation delay (about 10ms) compare to other orbits due to closeness to the Earth.
  • Due to lower latency, it can be used for realtime time critical applications.
  • Better frequency reuse can be achieved due to smaller footprints.
  • It provides high elevation for polar regions of the Earth. Hence better global coverage can be achieved.

Enrich Your Learning:

Low Earth Orbit (LEO)

  • International Space Station (400 km), the Hubble Space Telescope (560 km)and some observation satellites are all rotating the earth in Low Earth Orbit.
  • LEO is high enough to significantly reduce the atmospheric drag yet close enough to observe the earth (remote sensing).
  • In LEO, the satellite’s orbital period is much smaller than the earth’s rotational period (24 hours).
  • That is, the satellites in LEO complete multiple revolutions in 24 hours (Lower the orbit, higher should be the speed).

Advantages of LEO:

  • Low Earth Orbit is used for things that we want to visit often, like the International Space Station, the Hubble Space Telescope and some satellites (usually spy satellites and other observation satellites).
  • This is convenient for installing new instruments, experiments, and return to earth in a relatively short time.

Disadvantages of LEO:

  • Atmospheric drag will lead to more fuel consumption and constant speed adjustments.
  • A satellite traveling in LEO does not spend very long over any one part of the Earth at a given time.
  • Hence, satellites in LEO are not suitable for communication and weather observation and forecasting.

What is the speed required to keep a satellite in LEO?

  • The speed is dependent on the distance from the centre of the Earth.
  • At an altitude of 200 km, the required orbital velocity is a little more than 27,400 kmph.
  • In the case of the space shuttle, it orbits the Earth once every 90 minutes at an altitude of 466 km.

Answer: Doumeira Islands, sometimes seen in news is located in Red Sea.

Enrich Your Learning:

Doumeira Islands

  • The Doumeira Islands are situated northeast of Djibouti and east of Eritrea near the Bab el-Mandeb in the Red Sea.
  • They consist of Doumeira, located less than one kilometer off of the Eritrean and Djiboutian shore, and the much smaller island of Kallîda, which is 250 meters to the east.
