  • Madhubani painting is folk painting practiced in Bihar (India) and
  • It is also referred to as Mithila Art (as it flourishes in the Mithila region of Bihar).
  • It is characterized by line drawings filled in by bright coloursand contrasts or patterns.
  • It has been traditionally done by the women of the region, though today men are also involved.
  • The origin of it is believed to be during the period of Ramayana.
  • It is popular because of tribal motifs and use of bright earthy colours.
  • The paintings are done with mineral pigments prepared by the artists.
  • The work is done on freshly plastered or a mud wall.
  • The colours are applied flat with no shading and no empty space is left.
  • In 1970, this art got recognition, when President honoured Jagdamba Devi with an award.

Why in news?

  • China launched its first Mars mission ‘Tianwen-1’ which is expected to land on the Red Planet’s surface in the first quarter of 2021.

About Tianwen-1 Mars rover mission:

  • It will be the first mission to place a ground-penetrating radar on the Martian surface.
  • It will lift off on a Long March 5 rocket, a launch system developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technologyfrom the Wenchang launch centre.
  • It will carry 13 payloads (seven orbiters and six rovers) that will explore the planet.
  • The success of the mission will make China the third country to achieve a Mars landingafter the USSR and the United States.
  • It will search the Martian surface for water, ice, investigate soil characteristics, and study the atmosphere.

Chandra Shekhar Azad (1906 to 1931):

  • He was revolutionary who organized and led a band of militant youth during India’s independence movement.
  • When apprehended by police while participating in noncooperation movement, he gave his name Azad.
  • Azad was disappointed by Gandhi’s suspension of the noncooperation movement after a revolutionary mob at Chauri Chaura.
  • He had joined radical Hindustan Republican Association and played a key role in reorganizing the HRA as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.
  • He was a close associate of Bhagat Singh and Rajguru.
  • He participated in Kakori train robbery & the revenge killing of a British police officer Saunders.
  • Determined never to be captured by police, Azad was constantly on the move.
  • He was betrayed to the police, who surrounded him at Allahabad’s Alfred Park (now Azad Park).

Bal Gangadhar Tilak:

  • He was an Indian social reformer and freedom activist.
  • Born in 1856 in Maharashtra, he was popularly known as Lokmanya Tilak.
  • He was called ‘The Father of the Indian Unrest’ by the British people who ruled India.
  • Known for his famous quote “Self Rule is our birthright, and we shall have it!”
  • He joined the Indian National Congress Party in the year 1890.
  • He started Kesari- a Marathi language weekly and Mahratta- an English weekly.
  • He had popular leaders such as Bipin Chandra Pal & Lala Lajpat Rai as his political companions.
  • The three were popularly known as ‘Lal-Bal-Pal triumvirate.’
  • When he was imprisoned during the freedom struggle, he wrote a book titled ‘Gita-Rahasya’.
  • Tilak proposed Grand celebrations on ‘Ganesh Chaturthi’ and ‘Shivaji Jayanti’ to inciting a sense of unity and inspiring nationalist sentiment among Indians.
  • He advocated the cause of women education and women empowerment.
  • He founded the Indian Home Rule League and served as its president.
