Report of Tiger Census:

Why in news?

  • Recently, Environment Minister has released updated report on India’s Tiger Survey.

Highlights of the report:

  • It puts the India’s tiger population at 2,367.
  • Madhya Pradesh has the highest number of tigers at 526 followed by Karnataka (524) & Uttarakhand (442).
  • Chhattisgarh and Mizoram saw a decline in tiger population.
  • Other States Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana saw a “positive” increase.

Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris):

  • IUCN Red List: Endangered
  • Largest populations in India and some smaller groups of tigers in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.
  • Habitats: tropical rainforests, marshes, and tall grasses.

Lidar-based survey technology:

  • Lidar-based survey technology will be used for the first time in India.
  • Lidar is a method of measuring distance by illuminating the target with laser light and measuring the reflection with a sensor.

Aim: to provide water and fodder to animals at the forest itself to deal with the challenge of human-animal conflict that was causing the death of animals

World Hepatitis Day:

  • The day is being observed on 28th July since 2010.
  • It is one of the 8 official global public health campaigns marked by the
  • 28 July was chosen to mark the birth anniversary of Professor Baruch Blumberg who had discovered hepatitis B virus.
  • He was awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1976) for this discovery.

About Hepatitis:

  • Inflammation of liveris usually referred as hepatitis.
  • Viral hepatitis is a widespread infectious disease normally caused by the hepatitis viruses A, B, C, D and E.
  • Hepatitis viruses are the most common cause of hepatitis in the world but other infections, toxic substances (e.g. alcohol, certain drugs), and autoimmune diseases can also cause hepatitis.

Difference between Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B & Hepatitis C:

  • Although each can cause similar symptoms, they have different modes of transmission and can affect the liver differently.
  • Hepatitis A appears only as an acute or newly occurring infection and does not become chronic. People with Hepatitis A usually improve without treatment.
  • Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C can also begin as acute infections, but in some people, the virus remains in the body, resulting in chronic disease and long-term liver problems.
  • There are vaccines to prevent Hepatitis A and B; however, there is not one for Hepatitis C.
  • If a person has had one type of viral hepatitis in the past, it is still possible to get the other types.
