National Electricity Distribution Company (NEDC) 

  • The government plans to set up a national electricity distribution company (NEDC) as an equal joint JV between the state-run NTPC Ltd and Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd
  • It will undertake electricity distribution by forming JVs with state-owned discoms and help bridge market and credit risks.
  • The two leading public sector, utilities that have formed a joint venture to set up NEDC are National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) and Power Grid Corporation of India.
  • Joint ventures with existing discoms, will be formed thus leveraging the experience of state-run firms such as NTPC and PGCIL to improve efficiency in areas such as system and network operations, asset management, and operations and maintenance.
  • The government has made it mandatory for state discoms to offer letters of credit as part of the payment security mechanisms in power purchase pacts to ensure timely payments by states to generation utilities.

What are NEDC’s objectives?

  • The aim of the NTPC-PGCIL joint venture is to act as a model discom, improving efficiency and resolve the issue of rising non-performing assets in the power sector.
  • NEDC will act as a nodal agency for implementing the Union government’s scheme in the distribution sector and also serve as an implementation agency for state discoms.
  • The main objective of the venture is to undertake the business for distribution of electricity in distribution circles in various states and Union Territories and other related activities.

  • To promote research in social sciences in the country.
  • Review the progress of social science research and give advice to its users;
  • Sponsor social science research programmes and projects and administer grants to institutions and individuals for research in social sciences;
  • Institute and administer scholarships and fellowships for research in social sciences;
  • Indicate areas in which social science research is to be promoted and adopt special measures for development of research in neglected or new areas;
  • Give financial support to institutions, associations, and journals engaged in social science research;
