Unnat Bharat Abhiyan:

  • Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is a flagship programme of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, with the intention to enrich Rural India.
  • It aims to leverage the knowledge base and resources of the Premier Institutions of the country to bring in transformational change in rural developmental process.
  • It also aims to create a vibrant relationship between the society and the higher educational institutes, with the latter providing the knowledge and technology support to improve the livelihoods in rural areas and to upgrade the capabilities of both the public and private organisations in the society.

About Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0:

  • Under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0, the institutions have been selected on a Challenge Mode and the scheme has been extended to 750 reputed Higher Educational Institutes (both public and private) of the country.
  • Also, scope for providing Subject Expert Groups and Regional Coordinating Institutes to handhold and guide the participating institutions has been strengthened.
  • IIT Delhi has been designated to function as the National Coordinating Institute for this programme and the Ministry intends to extend the coverage to all the reputed Higher Educational Institutes, in a phased manner. Each selected institute would adopt a cluster of villages / panchayats and gradually expand the outreach over a period of time.

  • Loan under this scheme is provided to Safai Karamchari and Scavenger women and their dependant daughters for projects with a maximum project cost upto Rs.100000/- for small and petty trade/business and sundry income generating activities
  • Promoter’s contribution is not insisted upon from the beneficiaries under MAY Scheme.
  • Loan component from NSKFDC can be provided upto maximum of 90% of the unit cost and the remaining 10% is to be provided by the State Channelizing Agencies in the form of loan, subsidy or from any other available sources of funds.

  • The India Remembers project is a joint endeavour of the USI and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).
  • The project is a part of the ‘India and the Great War’ Centenary Commemoration project initiated by the USI in 2014 with the support of the Ministry of External Affairs and in close association with the British High Commission.
  • India Remembers launched in India on 14 July 2016 – a date that marks one of the last cavalry charges of the Great War – made by the Indian Army during the Battle of the Somme.

Why in news?

  • As a result of India Remembers, the marigold was adopted as India’s new symbol of remembrance. It will be the symbol of remembrance for Indian soldiers martyred in First World War.

Why was it chosen?

  • The marigold was chosen because it is easily and widely available and also because saffron is often seen as a colour of sacrifice.
  • The First World War ended with the signing of the armistice on November 11, 1918. Since then, poppy was adopted as the symbol of remembrance as it grew widely in the Flanders fields in Europe where some of the major battles were fought.
  • In India, the India Gate was built as the focal point to the Remembrance with the names of over 72,000 soldiers inscribed over it. The government and the Army have to formally adopt the marigold to make it an official effort.

  • To promote Military cooperation, India and Japan are all set to hold the first ever joint military exercise ‘DHARMA GUARDIAN-2018’ involving the Indian Army and Japan Ground Self Defence Force at Counter Insurgency Warfare School, Vairengte, Mizoram, India in November 2018.
  • The Indian contingent will be represented by 6/1 GORKHA RIFLES while the Japanese contingent will be represented by 32 Infantry Regiment of the Japanese Ground Self Defence Force.
  • During the 14 day long exercise, due emphasis will be laid on increasing interoperability between forces from both countries.
  • The objective of the exercise is to build and promote Army to Army relation in addition to exchange skills and experiences of both the armies.
  • The focus of the two-week-long exercise ‘Dharma Guardian-2018″ will be to enhance tactical skills against global terrorism and increase interoperability between the two forces.
  • It will contribute immensely in developing mutual understanding and respect for each other’s militaries and also facilitate tracking the worldwide phenomenon of terrorism.
