  • Mesovelia is a genus of water treaders in the family Mesoveliidae. There are at least 30 described species in Mesovelia.
  • Mesovelia are semi-aquatic insects that can walk or run on the surface of water.
  • Their size ranges from 5 mm to 4.5 mm and are equipped with hydrophobic setae (bristles) on their legs.
  • The insects are pale green with silver-white wings with black veins on the basal half.
  • The combination of hydrophobic setae and water surface tension prevents them from sinking.
  • They are hemimetabolous insects without having larval stage i.e., they go from egg to nymph to adult.
  • There are 12 species of genus Mesovelia found in India.

What is NIRF?

  • The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to rank all institutions of higher education in India.
  • It was launched in September 2015.
  • This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country.
  • The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources”, “Research and Professional Practices”, “Graduation Outcomes”, “Outreach and Inclusivity” and “Perception”.
  • NIRF has been given the responsibility of ranking institutions that have applied and submitted their data.
  • The ranking of the Institutions will be done based on the parameters proposed by NIRF for different disciplines. It ranks nine categories of institutions including universities, engineering, management, pharmacy, architecture, Law, medical institutions and general degree colleges.
  • The rankings assume significance as performance of institutions has been linked with “Institutions of Eminence” scheme.

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan:

  • Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is a flagship programme of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, with the intention to enrich Rural India.
  • It aims to leverage the knowledge base and resources of the Premier Institutions of the country to bring in transformational change in rural developmental process.
  • It also aims to create a vibrant relationship between the society and the higher educational institutes, with the latter providing the knowledge and technology support to improve the livelihoods in rural areas and to upgrade the capabilities of both the public and private organisations in the society.

About Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0:

  • Under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan 2.0, the institutions have been selected on a Challenge Mode and the scheme has been extended to 750 reputed Higher Educational Institutes (both public and private) of the country.
  • Also, scope for providing Subject Expert Groups and Regional Coordinating Institutes to handhold and guide the participating institutions has been strengthened.
  • IIT Delhi has been designated to function as the National Coordinating Institute for this programme and the Ministry intends to extend the coverage to all the reputed Higher Educational Institutes, in a phased manner. Each selected institute would adopt a cluster of villages / panchayats and gradually expand the outreach over a period of time.

Bahubali festival

  • The Bahubali Mahamastakabhisheka Mahotsav is believed to be one of the most important religious occasions for Jains.
  • The event was carried out in the precise manners prescribed in the Jain scriptures and in the scale and grandeur befitting the enormity of the image.
  • The festival is an anointing ceremony of the statue of Lord Bahubali, the son of lord Rishabhanatha who was the first of the 24 Jain Tirthankaras.
  • The statue is of monolithic Gomateshwara situated in Shravanabelagola near Bengaluru, Karnataka.
  • It is a 10-day festival, celebrated at a large scale in Karnataka’s Dharmasthala. It referred as Grand Consecration, Mahamastakabhisheka which is performed once in 12 years. The ‘padabhisheka’ to the statue is held every year.
  • In this, ‘Agrodaka’ procession will be carried out. Purified water and sandalwood paste is poured over the statue from a scaffolding. The event continues for weeks.
  • The statue is then bathed and anointed with milk, sugarcane juice, saffron paste, and sprinkled with powders of sandalwood, turmeric, and vermilion.
  • The sculpture of Lord Bahubali stands for renunciation, self-control and subjugation of the ego as a reflection of his life.
  • The mahamastakabhisheka of Lord Bahubali was earlier performed in 1982, 1995, and in 2007 in Dharmasthala.
