The famous Kadaknath chicken meat from Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh has now got a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

  • GI registration is valid up to a period of around five years till February 7, 2022.

Significance of the move:

  • GI tag will ensure that no one else can use name Kadaknath Chicken while selling any other black chicken.
  • It will also enhance its commercial value that will translate into higher prices for producers mainly tribal districts of Jhabua.

About Kadaknath chicken:

  • It is native tribal districts of Jhabua, Alirajpur and parts of Dhar in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Kadaknath chicken breed is unique for its black colour due to its black-feathers. Its black colour stems from the deposition of melanin pigment.
  • This breed of chicken is popular for its adaptability and flavourful good-tasting black meat, which is believed to have medicinal properties.
  • Kadaknath chicken contains 25-27% of protein in comparison with other breeds of chickens that contain 18% protein. It is also known for its high iron content. It has fat and cholesterol content lower compared with other chicken breeds.

About ‘Seva Bhoj Yojna’:

  • The scheme seeks to reimburse the central government’s share of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) and Integrated Goods and Service Tax (IGST) on purchase of raw items such as ghee, edible oil, atta, maida, rava, flour, rice pulses, sugar and jaggery, which go into preparation of food/prasad/langar/bhandara offered free of cost by religious institutions.
  • The main objective of the scheme is to lessen the financial burden of such charitable religious institutions, which provide free of cost without any discrimination to the general public and devotees.

Beneficiaries:

The charitable religious institutions including temples, gurudwara, mosque, church, dharmik ashram, dargah, monasteries, which fulfill the following criteria are eligible for the grant:

  • The institutions that have been in existence for at least five years before applying for financial assistance/grant.
  • The institutions that serve free food to at least 5000 people in a month.
  • The institutions covered under Section 10 (23BBA) of the Income Tax Act or those registered as Society under Societies Registration Act (XXI of 1860) or as a Public Trust under any law for the time being in force of statuary religious bodies constituted under any Act or institutions registered under Section 12AA of Income Tax Act.

Selection criteria:

  • All eligible religious and charitable institutions first must register with Darpan portal of NITI Aayog and get Unique ID generated by it.
  • Thereafter, they shall enroll themselves in CSMS Portal on the Ministry of Culture’s website in prescribed format. The applications will be examined by committee constituted for purpose.
  • On basis of recommendation of committee, competent authority in Ministry of Culture will register these institutions for reimbursing claim of CGST and Central Government share of IGST paid on mentioned specific items.

The State Bank of India (SBI), India’s largest bank, has launched a Multi Option Payment Acceptance Device (MOPAD) for digital convenience of customers and merchants.

  • SBI will roll-out this new initiative on all SBI PoS terminals in a phased manner.

About MOPAD:

  • It aims at providing digital convenience to customers and ease of doing business for merchants at the same time.
  • It allows the customer to make payments through “Cards, Bharat QR, UPI and SBI Buddy (e-wallet)” on a single PoS (Point of Sale) terminal.
  • MOPAD will help merchants to integrate different kinds of transaction through one PoS machine which will help in eliminating their operational inconvenience and streamline cash flow.

Significance:

  • It is expected that this multipurpose initiative will enhance the digital ecosystem and help the bank in driving the economy towards a less-cash society.

Background:

  • Tobacco prevalence in Delhi has come down by 6.5 per cent in the past six years which is more than the rest of India average figures.
  • The National Health Policy 2017 of the Government of India has set targets of relative reduction in tobacco prevalence by 15 per cent by 2020 and 30 per cent by 2025. Delhi has already achieved these targets before 2017.

RUCO (Repurpose Used Cooking Oil) initiative was launched by which Indian Organization?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) launched RUCO (Repurpose Used Cooking Oil) initiative to enable collection and conversion of used cooking oil to biodiesel.

  • Under this initiative, 64 companies at 101 locations have been identified to enable collection of used cooking oil. For instance: McDonald’s has already started converting used cooking oil to biodiesel from 100 outlets in Mumbai and Pune.
  • FSSAI wants businesses using more than 100 litres of oil for frying, to maintain a stock register and ensure that UCO is handed over to only registered collecting agencies.

Significance of the initiative:

  • FSSAI believes India has the potential to recover 220 crore litres of used cooking oil for the production of biodiesel by 2022 through a co-ordinated action.
  • While biodiesel produced from used cooking oil is currently very small, but a robust ecosystem for conversion and collection is rapidly growing in India and will soon reach a sizable scale.

 

 

‘Four-corner agreement’ was signed between Government of India and which state governments?

The agreement was signed between Government of India, Governments of Mizoram and Tripura and Mizoram Bru Displaced People’s Forum (MBDPF) in July 2018.

Provisions of agreement:

  • Under the agreement, the central government will provide financial assistance for rehabilitation of Bru community members in Mizoram and address their issues of security, education, livelihood, etc. in consultation with the governments of Mizoram and Tripura.
  • According to the agreement, the Mizoram government would ensure security for all repatriated refugees who were identified and verified as per the 1997 electoral rolls of Mizoram.
  • These families who moved to Mizoram from Tripura will be given one-time financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to be kept as fixed deposit in name of head of family. This cash assistance will be to be provided only after three years of uninterrupted stay in Mizoram.
  • The agreement also provides for free ration for two years and a monthly assistance of Rs 5,000 for each family.
  • The agreement covers 5,407 Bru families (32876 persons) presently staying in temporary camps in Tripura to repatriate them to Mizoram before September 30, 2018.
  • Moreover, house building assistance of Rs 1.5 lakh will be also disbursed to these families in three instalments.
  • Identity documents such as ration cards and Aadhaar will be issued by Tripura government

About the Bru community:

  • The Brus, also referred to as the Reangs, are spread across the northeastern states of Tripura, Assam, Manipur, and Mizoram.

Background:

  • A bout of ethnic violence forced thousands of people from the Bru tribe to leave their homes in Mizoram. As many as 32,876 people belonging to 5,407 families are living in the refugee camps in the Jampui Hills of Tripura.
  • The displaced Bru people from Mizoram have been living in various camps in Tripura since 1997. In 1997, the murder of a Mizo forest guard at the Dampa Tiger Reserve in Mizoram’s Mamit district allegedly by Bru militants led to a violent backlash against the community, forcing several thousand people to flee to neighbouring Tripura.
  • The Bru militancy was a reactionary movement against Mizo nationalist groups who had demanded in the mid-1990s that the Brus be left out of the state’s electoral rolls, contending that the tribe was not indigenous to Mizoram.

About National Logistics Portal:

  • It will be implemented in phases and will fulfil Central Government’s commitment to enhance trade competitiveness, create jobs, boost India’s performance in global rankings and pave way for India to become logistics hub.
  • Stakeholders like traders, manufacturers, logistics service providers, infrastructure providers, financial services, Government departments and groups and associations will all be on one platform.

India’s logistics sector:

  • India’s logistics sector is highly defragmented and very complex with more than 20 government agencies, 40 partnering government agencies (PGAs), 37 export promotion councils, 500 certifications, 10000 commodities being stakeholders in it.
  • At present it has 160 billion market size and involves 12 million employment base, 200 shipping agencies, 36 logistic services, 50 IT ecosystems and banks and insurance agencies.
  • Government is aiming is to reduce logistics cost from present 14% of GDP to less than 10% by 2022.
  • As per Economic Survey 2017-18, Indian logistics sector provides livelihood to more than 22 million people.
  • Improving this sector will facilitate 10% decrease in indirect logistics cost leading to growth of 5 to 8% in exports. Further, the Survey estimates that worth of Indian logistics market will be around US $215 billion in next two years compared to about US $160 billion currently.

  • Umang is an initiative to promote Digital India program.
  • The app was developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and National e-Governance Division (NeGD).
